Here is another look at the deep-set eyes and the massive muzzle that contains those enormous teeth. During the last century this muzzle was considered a primitive trait retaining canine features; hence its latin name "Cynocephalus" meaning dog-headed. Actually, the muzzle, which had been lost, re-evolved in order to hold those enormous teeth when baboons came down from the trees to become more terrestrial. The size of the male also increased to twice the female size due to competition and the need for more protection on the ground.
