The male silverback arbitrates disputes among his group. He will slow down to accommodate the sick or injured. He defends the females and children against other gorillas and humans - the only kind of predators he really fears. He protects the group with his life, as do the females. Their habitat is disappearing at an alarming rate. There are only about 600 Mountain Gorillas left in the world. They are extremely endangered.
