"Let's Go for a Swim!"
Most Hippos conceive during the dry season and give birth during the rainy season. Breeding, however, is not strictly seasonal. Before calving, cows isolate themselves. The calves are usually born rump first, underwater. They must immediately surface to breathe. They are adapted to nursing underwater and are able to graze a little by end of the first month. The bond between mothers and calves is strong.
