"Getting a Little Crowded?"
The Hippo has a barrel-shaped body carried by 4 stubby legs. Males can reach 11 feet and weigh up to 7000 pounds. They have an enormous muzzle which is noticeably bigger than the female's, who are also smaller in body size. The large, heavy head has small ears, slit-like nostrils and bulbous eyes high on the top of the head. This gives them full use of their senses while almost totally submerged. Hippos can stay completely underwater for about 5 minutes while walking along the bottom. At this time, the ears and nostrils are closed.
