"Life and Death on the Serengeti"
The Hyena is an opportunistic predator that prefers young and incapacitated prey. We had just witnessed the birth of a newborn Thomson's Gazelle when we noticed a spotted hyena wandering aimlessly through the Thomson's herd. The newborn immediately went to the ground and froze, as did all the other calves. The hyena suddenly veered off course and grabbed another calf that had apparently moved. That movement was fatal. All that the Tommys could do was watch helplessly as the hyena fed on the young calf.
