"Anubis, God of the Dead"
The Black-backed or Silver-backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas) is a small elegant canine with a tan coat and a dark (black with silver intermixed) saddle. It has long pointed ears and a bushy tail. It is found in the Serengeti woodlands, where it holds permanent territories. It is an omnivore that will eat whatever is available in its habitat, including small prey, insects, spiders, lizards and fruits. It was worshipped by the Ancient Egyptians as a god of the dead, a man with the head of a jackal.
